Independent Speech and Language Therapy Services Ltd

Autism Assessment Service

We provide an autism spectrum disorder assessment service for adults.

We work with other professionals in a multi-disciplinary team to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (‘ASD’).

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (‘NICE’) guidelines state that an ASD assessment can be done by just one professional if they are a psychiatrist or chartered psychologist, but two professionals from different disciplines is the gold standard.

Can I just say how delighted I am with the lovely working relationship developing between my son and Nick. Nick has made a great connection very quickly and my son has thoroughly enjoyed their assessment sessions together. Onward and upwards to new adventures in the New Year!

Background information

Assessments are undertaken by a multi-disciplinary team comprising a chartered psychologist and a consultant speech and language therapist. All clinicians involved have extensive experience working with people with social communication difficulties and diagnosing ASD.

Before agreeing to undertake a full assessment, individuals are requested to complete a questionnaire providing information about their concerns, presentation and some background information. The information obtained will be used to decide whether there is sufficient evidence to warrant a full assessment.

Assessment Process

Full assessment, should it be carried out, is likely to entail a combination of the following, depending on the specific needs and presentation of the individual:

  • Meeting with the individual to take a comprehensive developmental and medical history, based on the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (‘DISCO’).
  • Direct assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (‘ADOS’) .

In line with NICE guidelines, the assessment is carried out as part of a multidisciplinary team, joint with a psychologist, and detailed information is also gathered from other settings such as the individual’s workplace.

Additional assessments may be needed depending on the presenting needs and/or in order to guide appropriate support and intervention.

We also partner with professionals from the following organisations to complete adult ASD assessments.

Please contact them directly for information on referral and costs.

How do I make a referral?

We offer an open referral system and referrals can be made by anyone, including parents, carers and professionals.

Referrals can be received by telephone, in writing or by email. In the case of voice disorders/difficulties, we are unable to see patients until a consultation with an Ear Nose and Throat specialist has been sought.
