Independent Speech and Language Therapy Services Ltd

Autism Assessment Service

We provide an autism spectrum disorder assessment service for children.

This service is available to parents who are concerned that their child or young person has an autism spectrum disorder and are seeking advice on whether or not pursue a diagnostic assessment now or in the future.

The assessment process complies with best practice as specified by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (‘NICE’); guidance available here.

Nick is our therapist, he is such a lovely person and is so knowledgeable, I honestly don’t know where we would be without him.

Initial Consultation

Before a full assessment is undertaken, the therapist undertakes a one-hour initial consultation with parents/carers to gather information about the child and to recommend whether or not a full assessment is appropriate.

All clinicians involved have extensive experience working with people with social communication difficulties.

How is the assessment organised?

Full assessment, should it be carried out, is likely to entail a combination of the following, depending on the specific needs and presentation of the child:

  • Detailed information from education staff.
  • Meeting with parents / carers to take a comprehensive developmental and medical history, based on the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (‘DISCO’).
  • Child assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (‘ADOS’) (play-based for younger children)

The assessment is carried out as part of a multidisciplinary team, joint with a psychologist, and detailed information is also gathered from the child’s school.

Additional assessments may be needed depending on the presenting needs and/or in order to guide appropriate support and intervention.

How much does it cost?

Initial Consultation

The cost of the initial one-hour consultation is £150 regardless of whether a full assessment is then carried out.

Full Assessment

The cost of the full assessment is a further £1,350, in addition to the £150 fee for the initial consultation.

How do I make a referral?

We offer an open referral system and referrals can be made by anyone, including parents, carers and professionals.

Referrals can be received by telephone, in writing or by email. In the case of voice disorders/difficulties, we are unable to see patients until a consultation with an Ear Nose and Throat specialist has been sought.
